Forest Regeneration Weekends Autumn 2019

Practical Ecosystem Restoration
Would you like to come and help plant some native forest, learn about ecosystem regeneration and reconnect with Nature and yourself? Then join us on an Awakened Forest Project work weekend.
If you can't come for a whole weekend there are also work days or just come for the day on a weekend.
There is much to do to help this burnt landscape restore itself. The most pressing thing is to collect and sow acorns and chestnuts into the ground ready for the autumn and winter rains to germinate them. Trees that grow from seed in place are much stronger and more resilient than planted trees. These young trees will also nurse any trees we will plant in the future. There is also some work moving the fallen pines and making some firewood to keep us warm at night and cook our dinner.
At the Awakened Forest Project, the foundational principle is that we are not separate from nature and each other but we have been taught to forget that. It is our experience that if we are truly to change the world then we need to establish ourselves in the truth of unity with all of Life. To do this we need to become aware of the habits that we use to distract ourselves from this truth. One of the ways we increase this awareness is by meditating together every morning. Simple instructions will be given if you have never meditated before and there will be lots of time for questions if you have any.
We will also spend part of our day in silence and we also ask you to be willing to turn off your phone for the weekend so we can be fully present with each other and the work. Our work here is about being more conscious so we will do everything we can to support that.
During the work weekend you will:
  • get your hands dirty doing essential restoration work for the forest
  • learn some useful practical regeneration skills
  • gain knowledge about how ecosystems regenerate
  • put your time and energy in service of the earth
  • unplug from your daily life and your screens
  • meditate daily
  • spend a short time each day in silence
  • enjoy being free and happy for no reason at all!
You need not having any practical experience but you must be reasonably fit and able to work and carry things on our steep slopes. Accommodation is in a dormitory in our unfinished hall or you can bring your own tent. Hot, satisfying vegetarian meals will be provided. There will also be hot showers with water heated from the sun or from wood and dinners cooked on our rocket stove. You will have a chance to experience what it is like to live off-grid surrounded by Nature.
You will need to bring:
Warm work clothes
Work gloves
Strong boots
Waterproof jacket and trousers
Sleeping bag and pillow
Mattress - if you have one
Tent - if you wish to sleep in one
Musical instrument - if you have one
The dates for Autumn 2019 weekends are:
27-29th of September

People have retreated to wild places for millennia to find inner peace and a greater perspective on life. Nature, in it’s simplicity and beauty, supports a profound relaxation in body, mind and soul.

It has been a long time since I have written a blog post because so much has been ongoingly changing in the last year. I wanted to wait until the dust and ash had settled and I knew where I would be before I wrote.

Many of the plants and trees the bees and other insects thrive on have burnt in the October fires and will not be flowering this year and some not next year either if they recover at all. Here are my suggestions on how to help the pollinators through these lean times.

God these are heartbreaking times. Rain that was so longed for in the summer is now pouring off these hills taking soil and stone and track with it onto the terraces and into rivers.

Many people have asked us how they can help in the wake of the fires and all we have lost. We are very touched and grateful for these offers of support. Here are some ways you can help:

We have started building the second floor of the workshop!! This will be our last major build here and will provide a dormitory and meditation/workshop room which will increase our capacities for events and hosting people, especially outside of the summer months.
